Amanda Claire Grace of Sparta recently graduated from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Sparta resident Jenna Cristine Carroll recently earned her doctorate degree in neuroscience from the University of Southern California. She was awarded the Heinz Osterburg Prize for the top doctorate candidate in the neuroscience program. Carroll’s specialty is Alzheimer’s disease research. She has authored or co-authored 10 papers demonstrating the efficacy of hormone therapy in reducing Alzheimer’s disease in women. Carroll has accepted a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in order to continue her research. Newton resident Megan Perry was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. A group of area residents recently graduated from Rowan University in New Jersey. They include Sparta residents Michelle C. Miseo, David Manuel Otero, Frank Nicholas Zywicki, Shawn Garrett Kretschmer and Orin Ross Redmond. Sparta resident Jonathan Rene Carroll, a 2005 graduate of Blair Academy, recently earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and government from Cornell University in Cornell, N.Y. At Cornell, he conducted research in psychology investigating guilt, moral decision making, and moral judgment. His senior year, Carroll completed an independent study entitled “Nietzsche and Existential Psychoanalysis.” He was also a coxswain on the varsity crew team. He plans to pursue doctoral studies in psychology next fall. Whitney Diane Buck of Sparta has been named to the spring semester Dean’s list at Radford University in Radford, Va. Jill Carey of Sparta was honored for academic excellence during its All-College Honors Convocation ceremonies at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics, business and English and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; Two Sparta residents were recently honored at ceremonies at Albright College in Reading, Pa. Kaila E. Hawriluk, a senior art/photography program major and graduate of James Caldwell High School, received the Ella M. Schaeffer Art Award, given to a senior student for outstanding talent and leadership in art. Simon K. Foster, a junior business administration/marketing track major and graduate of Sparta High School, received the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award, given to a junior who has shown development in purpose and in attitude toward business and who has studied business or economics in classes using this financial newspaper as a reference. Cristina Garafola of Sparta, a Sparta High School graduate and sophomore at Hamilton College in Hamilton, N.Y., was awarded an Dean Alfange Essay Prize at the college’s annual Class and Charter Day. Established by Dean Alfange, Class of 1922, the prizes are awarded to the students who write the best and second-best essays on a feature or an issue of American constitutional government. She is majoring in world politics and Chinese. Sparta Resident Trisha Fitton has been named to the dean’s list at Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah. She is a 2006 graduate of Pope John XX111 High School. She is also vice president of her sorority, Sigma Delta Tau. Carolyn Inga and Steven King of Sparta have been named to the York College of Pennsylvania dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester. Dr. Alexander D. Kimon of Sparta graduated from the Harvard University School of Dental Medicine with a dentariae medicinae doctor (DMD) degree. While at Harvard, Kimon was granted the Paul Dudley White Fellowship for his research regarding smoking cessation promotion in Greece. He participated in many clubs and committees, sang with choirs in the Boston area, and volunteered as a student dentist for “Give Kids a Smile” and “Project Bridge.” A 2001 graduate of Sparta High School, Kimon graduated from New York University magna cum laude in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in chemistry.
