Hardyston Marjory Robinson was Mrs. Marjory Murphy when she was named the first Mrs. Lake Mohawk (a contest which is no longer run) and was later crowned Mrs. New Jersey in 1951. To win the title, she participated in the usual swimsuit competition, but for the talent portion she had to compete in peeling potatoes and sewing buttons. She was also required to make something on a sewing machine. She made a quilt. The 90-year-old now lives in Crystal Springs, but she spent most of her life in Sparta, where she taught third grade at Helen Morgan school. Robinson and her family went to the Mrs. New Jersey finals on July 18 in Toms River to cheer on another local contestant, Jennifer Macones, who is the new Mrs. New Jersey, and lives in Sparta.
