Newark - Candace Ciasullo, a 2008 Wallkill Valley Regional High School graduate and second year undergraduate architecture student at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, was recently named one of eight winners, out of 115 contestants, in the competition for the Masonry Design Build Architecture Award. College of Architecture students and NJ Masonry Contractors worked together to make the winning designs into reality. The Masonry Contractors donated all of the bricks and laymen, and together the group built each of the eight winning designs, brick by brick. An awards banquet was held for the students, their faculty and a team of professional guests from across the country, including the Dean of NJIT College of Art and Design, the President and Vice President of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, the Director of the International Masonry Institute, and four renowned architects. Each guest critiqued the student designs and then the eight winning recipients received their awards, making it a true “hands-on” education experience. Candace’s winning build, along with the others, can be seen in front of the NJIT College of Architecture and Design, Summit Street, Newark, NJ. After earning her five-year Bachelor of Architecture, Candace plans to pursue a Master of Architecture degree.
