McBriar installed as president of the Sussex County Bar Association

SPARTA — Schenck, Price, Smith & King attorney Robert B. McBriar, based in the firm’s Sparta office, was sworn in as the new President of the Sussex County Bar Association for the 2017-2018 term. The Honorable William J. McGovern, III, J.S.C. administered the oath of office to McBriar and other officers and trustees of the SCBA. Since 2011, McBriar has served in every leadership position of the SCBA.
The SCBA has more than 150 members. At the Installation Dinner, held at the Lake Mohawk Country Club, McBriar cited the stated purposes of the Bar Association: “The object of the Association shall be to advance the science of jurisprudence, promote the administration of justice, uphold the honor of the profession, encourage cordial relations among its members, provide educational and legal resources to members as well as the public, maintain high standards of ethics in the conduct of the legal profession, and aid and assist the courts in the orderly and more effective disposition of litigation and make legal services effectively available to the public.”
McBriar recognized that “since 1916, the Sussex County Bar Association has been committed to these goals.” He stated that he “is honored to serve in this position and looks forward to working with the current officers, trustees, and membership in continuing their collective commitment to the legal community and the public which it serves.”
McBriar, Counsel at Schenck, Price, Smith & King, represents numerous public and private clients in a variety of legal areas including civil litigation, insurance defense, government law, property taxation, and land use.
As part of the firm’s Insurance Defense Group, McBriar handles all aspects of insurance defense litigation, from initial case evaluation and strategy through trial. He is experienced in defending public entities and officials in litigation involving professional liability and property/casualty coverage.
As part of his government law practice, McBriar regularly counsels public entities regarding legislation, regulation and general administration. In addition, he assists with substantive legal issues involving public contracts, elections, OPMA, OPRA, code enforcement, land use, affordable housing, redevelopment and property taxation.
McBriar frequently appears before the New Jersey State Tax Courts and County Tax Boards on behalf of taxing districts and property owners in defending and litigating real property tax appeals. He has handled a broad range of tax appeal matters involving complex commercial developments, financial institutions, golf courses, self-storage facilities, residential property, and vacant land. In addition, he provides legal guidance and representation involving other tax issues such as farmland assessment, exemptions for non-profit organizations and exemptions pursuant to Long Term Exemption Law and Five-Year Exemption and Abatement Law.

McBriar earned his Juris Doctorate from New York Law School where he served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Francis Alessandro, New York City Civil Court, Bronx County. Prior to attending law school, McBriar graduated from Boston College with a BS in Biology, Pre-Medical Program and a BA in English. McBriar also attended St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University where he studied philosophy and literature. He is a graduate of Pope John XXIII Regional High School.
In 2014, McBriar was 1 of 49 lawyers in the State to be recognized by the New Jersey Law Journal as a New Leader of the Bar. In 2015, he was chosen Young Business Leader of the Year by the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, McBriar was appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to the District XB Ethics Committee for a four-year term serving West Morris and Sussex Counties. He is a trustee of the 200 Club of Sussex County and is also a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, and Sussex and Warren County Bar Associations. He frequently volunteers for Legal Services of Northwest New Jersey.
