Sussex teen dies after 3-car crash

Zachary Matthews, 19, of Sussex died Friday, Oct. 3 of injuries he suffered in a three-car accident a day earlier in Warwick, N.Y., police there said.

Just after 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, Town of Warwick police and the Pine Island, N.Y., Fire Department and emergency medical services were dispatched to an accident on County Route 1 at Missionland Road.

They found that the driver of a 2012 Suzuki sedan, Matthews, was trapped inside with serious injuries.

Firefighters got him out and he received emergency treatment before he was taken to Pine Island Park, where a medevac helicopter took him to Westchester Medical Center.

Also involved in the crash were a 2020 Ford Explorer and a 2017 Chevrolet Express. The driver of the Explorer, a 39-year-old woman, and her 22-year-old passenger were taken to Garnet Medical Center and the driver of the Express, a 32-year-old from Pine Bush, was taken to St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick.

All three had non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident is being investigated by the Town of Warwick Police Department and the New York State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
