West Milford 13ers to hike Apshawa Preserve

West Milford — The West Milford 13ers Hiking Club invites you to explore one of the Highlands newest hiking areas, the Apshawa Preserve, with local author and hike leader Don Weise. The hike will be moderately paced and will cover six to seven miles. Those seeking an additional challenge may continue with the group on a second, three- to four-mile hike in southern Norvin Green State Forest. The hike meets at 9:30 a.m. at the Apshawa Preserve in West Milford. The Apshawa Preserve is known for its diverse habitats, scenic vistas, Butler Reservoir, ponds, cascading brooks, and some mysterious giant metal tanks in the middle of the forest. “It’s hard to imagine how someone got those huge fluorination tanks up such a steep ravine,” said Weise. “Apshawa Overlooks” is one of 13 required peaks that must be climbed in order to become a West Milford 13er. Cost to participate is $8 per person. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring lunch and plenty of water. A detailed description of this hike and seventeen more local hikes can be found in Weise’s book, West Milford Baker’s Dozen (www.weishike.com).
