Wantage actress in Steel Magnolias
SPARTA Robert Harling’s drama/comedy “Steel Magnolias” opens Oct. 15 at the Cornerstone Playhouse at Lake Mohawk Country Club. The cast of six women takes theater-goers through the ups and downs of their lives through their weekly chats at the Beauty Shop of bigger than life “Truvy.” Truvy, played by Diane Pollett of Middleville, brings life to the otherwise calm Southern town by allowing the women to let loose with their emotions, stories, heartaches and dreams with their weekly hair appointments. Truvy’s salon is the closest thing to an analyst’s couch these women have. The story opens up on the wedding day of Shelby played by Cornerstone newcomer Meredith Yannuzzi, and the first day of employment of Annelle (Anna Beth Prescott of Stanhope) the simple, naïve, nervous stylist who Truvy befriends. From this moment on the story takes you on a fast journey over a few years of trials and triumphs. The cast is rounded out by the comedic performances of Claire McDonald of Mt. Arlington as Ouiser and Debbie Guarino of Wantage as Clairee. Directors Linda Brady and Anne Wheeler, both of Sparta, have created an intimate setting in a 1980s beauty salon equipped with mismatched chairs and big hair. The theater space and in-the-round concept allows the audience to feel like customers in the salon who get a chance to eavesdrop on the lives of the cast. Reservations are recommended as seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 973-729-2120.
