Three artists featured at Gallery 23
BLAIRSTOWN A public reception will be held on Saturday June 6 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. to honor three Gallery 23 artists. Randolph resident Larry Olanoff is a glass mosaic artist and has been creating functional glass mosaic artwork for over eight years. He applies mosaics to tables, platters, mirrors and other forms such as windows. The patterns he creates include various geometric designs with unique patterns ranging from southwest to art nouveau designs. His work has been featured in numerous galleries and craft shows in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Illene Olanoff, a potter, has been working in ceramics for over 25 years. She began with classes at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art in Kalamazoo, Mich., and Kalamazoo Valley College and continues to take pottery workshops to get new inspirations for her work. Even though she finds throwing on the wheel to be the most satisfying method, she also enjoys slabwork, handbuilding, stamping and carving into her work. She uses both red and white earthenware clay and glazes with vibrant colors. She has been influenced by both Japanese and Southwest Pottery. Deborah Kaplan makes both sculptural and functional porcelain pottery. She began taking classes 14 years ago in Steve Branfman’s Massachusetts studio, continued at Silvermine School of Art in Connecticut, and now works in her studio at home in Mendham. She continues her studies with workshops at Peter’s Valley Craft Center, woodfiring with Janet Mansfield, and Lynn Munns, handbuilding with Lana Wilson, and soda firing with Susan Harris and Bruce Dehnert. Gallery 23 is an artist co-op at 23 Main St. in Blairstown. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call 908-362-6865 or visit www.gallery23.com.
