They're young, but they make beautiful music
NEWTON The Sussex County Youth Orchestras will present a free Spring Concert this Sunday, June 7, at 3:00 p.m. at Newton High School. The program will include wide varieties of musical style and instrumentation. The ages of the participants range from elementary age children through high school and some young adults in college. The program will begin with the Suzuki Strings performing traditional folk songs and classic pieces like the favorite “Humoresque.” The young Rocking Strings Orchestra will balance their part of the program with a Mozart classic, an American march, a fiddle tune and two popular rock songs, “Iron Man” and “Wipe Out.” The Preparatory Orchestra will play a medley from the famous musical “Chicago,” a movement from Mozart’s string quartet “The Hunt,” The Prelude from Grieg’s “Holberg Suite” and a selection of songs by Santana. The Youth Orchestra will feature three senior soloists: Morgana Ross from Sparta High School on violin performing “Gypsy Airs” by Sarasate; Zachary Maher from Vernon High School performing Saint-Saens Cello Concerto; Garrett Lonzello from Newton High School performing “Concertino for Tuba and Strings” by Frackenpohl. The full symphony orchestra will finish out the program with Brahms’ “Academic Festival Overture,” a Duke Ellington big band medley and the Finale from Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony. The Sussex County Youth Orchestras are co-directed by Dawn and Gerald Tedesco assisted by conductors John Sepe and Alan Tedesco. This concert has been made possible in part by the N.J. State Council on the Arts, through the State/County Partnership Block Grant as administered by the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council. Newton High School is handicapped accessible. This musical event is free and the community is cordially invited to attend. The Youth Orchestra is one of ten orchestras invited to the Hayden Festival in the Konzerthaus in Vienna.
