Sussex — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service invite children ages 14 and under to its annual fishing event at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. “Folks will appreciate this event as one of the premiere bass fishing opportunities for children in our area,” said Acting Refuge Manager Michael Horne. The event is being conducted in partnership with Vernon-based Double V Rod and Gun Club and the Friends of Wallkill River NWR. Volunteers from the Double V will be available to assist the children with baiting and casting their lines. The pond is located in the refuge at 285 Lake Wallkill Road, in Sussex. This area will only be open for this special two-day event. Participating children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. A small supply of loaner poles and bait is available; however, participants are encouraged to bring their own bait and tackle. The event is free. Refreshments will be provided by The Friends of Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge.
