Styling for a cause

ANDOVER — Sussex County residents did not mind waiting for a haircut at the Ultima Hair Designers Salon and Spa on Sunday. It was worth it, since each haircut benefited 11-month-old Maya Gordon, who is battling Familial HLH, a rare blood disorder. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant, and Maya is prepping for it with an eight week course of chemotherapy. The salon’s cut-a-thon will help to defray Maya’s mounting medical bills. Maya is the daughter of salon employee Shana (Sabourin) and Kris Gordon, a corrections officer. The family resides in Ogdensburg. The salon will raffle off a dollhouse on March 17, donated by Montague Resident Bob Roverse. Donations can also be made at the salon, with payment made out directly to Maya Gordon. Other fundraising events are in the works, including one on March 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hampton Township Fire House on Halsey Road. The afternoon will feature vendors and a bake sale from area scout troops, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Maya. In the meantime, a donor is being sought for Maya. Salon owner Glenda Flanagan said bone marrow extraction is not as complex as it used to be, and hopes people interested in being a donor will reach out.
