Spring Street revs up for holidays

    NEWTON — Main Street Newton Second Saturday and Spring Street businesses are hosting a multitude of events on Saturday, Nov. 14. Cheddar Alley (155 Spring St.) will hold its third annual Cheddar Event, with cheese tasting, recipes, serving suggestions, and beer and wine pairings. An Open Book (169 Spring St.) will host an 11 a.m. “soirée” featuring Fancy Nancy adventures. J.C.’s Grill House (144 Spring St.), back from its late summer hiatus, will offer lunch and dinner. The Craft Creators (185 Spring St., in the back) will host an art show and sale from noon to 8 p.m., featuring watercolor and photography by Barbara Hornstra, photography by Salvatore Vasapolli and handmade pottery by Carol Harris. Maxwell & Molly’s Closet (218 Spring St.) will be giving away a holiday toy with a $50 purchase while supplies last. Charm (216 Spring St.) is offering 15 percent off on furniture purchases for the day. Traillworks (135 Spring St.) will host a free grocery bag bookmaking demonstration by Sussex County’s bookmaking artist, Renie Garlick of Zhine Studio, from 2 until 3 p.m. Throughout the day, visitors to TraillWorks can enter to win a limited edition, signed and numbered copy of Jennie Traill Schaeffer’s newly released handmade artist’s book, featuring a giclée of “Homage to Julia” on the cover. The book was made by Garlick and co-designed with Schaeffer. Greater Newton Vacuum and Sewing Company (137 Spring St.) is holding an all-day sale of Christmas items, furniture, dolls, Masonic and Daughters of Scotia Eastern Star fraternal items from the estate of Margaret and Wallace Frankenfield. Springboard Shoppes at Newton (145 Spring St.), open all day from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., have teamed up to provide a 3 p.m. runway show, “The Art of Holiday Fashion,” featuring clothing and accessories from all the stores. Lou’s Music Center (120 Spring St.) will offer a special treat with each purchase. Late afternoon picks up at the Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council (133 Spring St.) featuring photographs from the Kittatinny Ridge by Salvatore Vasapolli, ceramics by Joyce Sullivan, Pam Madzy and Carol Harris, and a SCA&HC Members group show on Wildlife from 4 until 7 p.m. For the model makers Feels Like Home (185 Spring St.) is hosting a hands-on clinic in miniature scenery production at 6:30 p.m., including techniques useful to model railroaders, gamers, diorama makers, and very helpful for elementary school projects.
