STILLWATER — The Historical Society of Stillwater Township will hold an open house at Lonecroft on Mount Holly Road on Saturday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lonecroft is a German-style farmhouse built circa 1790 and sits on 120 acres, along with a two-story stone spring house and a wagon barn, both circa 1840. Lonecroft is a Flurkuchenhaus (hall-kitchen house), a German design in which a center through-hall serves as the kitchen. It is thought to be the sole surviving intact house of its type in northwestern New Jersey. In the 18th Century, Lonecroft was the residence of tanner and farmer Georg Ginsberg, an early German settler. It remained in his family until the mid-20th Century. “Even within Stillwater, a town blessed with many well-preserved historic properties, Lonecroft is an exceptional treasure,” said Bob Grabowsky, historical society president. “The house is in pristine condition. All the hardware is original, as are the floors and beamed ceilings.” The house is not visible from the road and the driveway is long and rugged; reliable vehicles should be used. The public is invited to tour the house and to explore the extensive grounds in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. Light refreshments will be served.
