On The Wharf featuring “Dracula: The Musical?”
Sugar Loaf, N.Y. - Fresh off the success of its first outdoor production of The Owl and the Pussycat, Kings Theatre Company is pleased to present Dracula: The Musical? This comedy farce will also be performed on the Lycian Centre’s new lakeside stage situated under a huge tent next to beautiful Creamery Pond in Sugar Loaf. Performances will take place Aug. 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23. All Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. and Sunday performances are at 3 p.m. Darkness falls, wolves howl and lunatics sing in this hysterical Rick Abbot spoof. It’s a madcap musical that spins the legend of everyone’s favorite vampire into a hilarious cabaret act complete with music, dancing and special effects. When Rick Abbot wrote this parody in the early 1980s, the idea of setting a gothic horror story to music was unheard of. Who knew that Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll and Hyde, the Musical were on the horizon? But where those shows take themselves quite seriously, Abbot’s Dracula, The Musical? pays as much homage to Mel Brooks as it does to Bram Stoker. Set in 19th century England, the story centers around a madhouse run by one Dr. Seward. His new neighbor is a certain Hungarian Count with designs on the neck of the doctor’s daughter, Mina. When the crazed vampire hunter Van Helsing arrives to warn the household, the family is slow to grasp the danger that she is in. How slow? When Van Helsing warns them that after the third bite on Mina’s neck, she “would become the same dreaded thing that he himself must forever be,” Sophie responds: “Hungarian?” But when the Count spirits Mina off to his castle, it’s up to Van Helsing, Seward, his ditzy wife Sophie, surly maid Nelly, Mina’s saucy friend Bubu and resident madman Boris Renfield to save her. This light-hearted romp will be the second show to be performed as part of the “On The Wharf” summer theatre series at the Lycian Centre. The Lycian’s newest performance venue is an intimate 100-seat theatre space with a round stage, excellent sight lines and tranquil Creamery Pond as its backdrop - all under a huge tent for maximum weather protection so shows will take place rain or shine. Seating is limited. All “On The Wharf” performances are $20 per person and include a free lemonade and cookie at intermission. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lycian Centre Box Office at 845-469-2287, Tuesday through Saturday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Information can also be found on the Web site: www.LycianCentre.com.
