Mining family life explored

OGDENSBURG — The Sterling Hill Mining Museum at 30 Plant St. in Ogdensburg will present “We Live By The Whistle” on Saturday, March 28 beginning at 1 p.m. The living history monodrama is performed by Jeanne L. Austin of “HerStory Productions” of Augusta. It is a partnership between the actress and husband playwright Peter R. Nadolny, which was formed to present the stories of women of the past “in a dramatic and interesting manner,” said organizers. The cultural diversity and family life of mining families spans from 1920 to the 1960s and portrays the strength women exhibited in keeping the family unit intact. They all “lived by the whistle” that sounded at regular intervals from dawn to dusk. The performance is preceded by an abbreviated tour of the site depicting a day in the life of a miner, which begins in the change house, now an exhibit hall, and ends through one of the actual mine tunnels where ore was extracted. Following a 15-minute break, the performance starts at 2:30 p.m. A donation of $10 per individual is appreciated.
