Local farm sponsors Rent-a-Chick Program
Jefferson Township Sparta Mountain Farm, a family-owned and operated farm in Jefferson Township, has begun receiving requests for baby chicks through their annual Rent-a-Chick Program. With this program, parents and teachers can “rent” two baby chicks on April 3 and return them to the farm two weeks later where they will be raised along with other happy, healthy hens. Children are encouraged to return to the farm to visit their chicks. This is an educational way to introduce children to caring for a live animal without a long-term commitment. For a $30 “rental fee” the purchaser receives two newly hatched chicks, a cozy box to keep them in, a two-week supply of feed, two containers, a personalized certificate, instructions on the care of a live chick, and a coupon for a dozen fresh farm eggs. This is a good alternative to giving a child a chick for Easter. According to the American Humane Association, a majority of baby chicks that are given as Easter gifts suffer and die from lack of proper care and stress a few weeks after the holiday excitement has passed. Chicks are limited, so parents and teachers are encouraged to reserve the chicks no later than March 27 by e-mailing the farm at Spartamtnfarm@optonline.net or by calling the farm at 973-409-4515.
