ANDOVER — Andover resident Lois McCue has written a book titled “Is ADD a Learned Behavior?” In it, McCue postulates that preschool child’s brain is wired in these very early years to learn behavior patterns just as it is wired to learn skills such as crawling, sitting, walking, talking, jumping, etc. She says behavior developed in these early years will be the behavior they will carry with them for a lifetime. McCue explores the importance of parents’ and caregivers’ responsibilty in presenting boundaries and rules that allow the child to learn how to listen and follow directions through relative consequences. “Children work hard to learn how to crawl, to sit, to walk, to talk, they are determined to learn and accomplish. It gives them satisfaction. We as parents and caregivers must be just as determined to teach them how to listen and follow directions so that they can have respect for themselves in knowing how to function and succeed in a world that lives under the guidance of rules, and boundaries,” she said. McCue wrote the book for parents, grandparents and caregivers to instill a sense of respect and responsibility for self, others and the environment.
