How has Sussex County changed through the years?
County historian will address many bits and pieces of the county’s history SPARTA Sparta Historical Society will feature Sussex County Historian Wayne T. McCabe on Thursday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. McCabe will be speaking about his recently released book, “Sussex County A Gazetteer.” Drawing from his vast collection of reference books, published local and regional histories, maps, newspaper articles and photographs, McCabe has assembled an illustrated gazetteer a reference book that provides hundreds of little-known facts about the county. For the first time, in a single book, all of the crossroads, hamlets, villages, towns, municipalities, brooks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, swamps, hills, mountains, camps, caves and mine locations in Sussex County are identified and described in detail. McCabe is a professional land use planner and a National Park Service qualified architectural historian. He has lived in Newton for 36 years and owns McCabe and Associates, Inc., a civil engineering, surveying and planning firm in Newton, and specializes in the field of historic preservation. The Society meets in the lower level of the Sparta Ambulance Squad building at 14 Sparta Ave. For members in good standing, the event is free; a $2 donation is appreciated from non-members.
