Grodsky and Bailey are at Gallery 23

Blairstown Sheila Grodsky and Emera ”Butch” Bailey are the March artists of the month at Gallery 23 in Blairstown. The public is invited to a reception in their honor on Saturday, March 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. Grodsky is known for her contemporary paintings in acrylic and watercolor. She received the Dagmar Tribble Memorial award for her painting “Sacred Rock” at the 39th annual juried exhibition of the Garden State Watercolor Society in November 2008. She is a life member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society. Grodsky, a Stillwater resident, received her training from Douglass College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts education from the Maryland Institute of Art and the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts. She is a founding member of Gallery 23 and currently serves as the co-op’s president. In addition to Gallery 23, Grodsky exhibits her work at Artists at the Mill Gallery in Lafayette. Bailey joined Gallery 23 in September 2009. He spent 32 years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a captain. Bailey was chosen to study woods, stains and refinishing antique furniture at the Smithsonian Institution when he was stationed in Washington, D.C. Born in northeastern Vermont, Bailey passed the time until spring by building airplanes and toys which he hung in the attic. When spring came, he had his Ferris wheel ready for action and charged a nickel a ride. He continued building furniture and toys when he retired. Many homes in Blairstown have a piece of furniture made by Bailey. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 12 noon to 4 p.m..
