Find out “What's On Your Plate?”
West Milford Ever wonder what’s on your plate? Sustainable West Milford will help tackle that with the help of Amy Jolin, director of Eat Local in Ringwood and director of Education for City Green, Inc. Jolin will screen a 23-minute segment from the documentary, “What’s on Your Plate?” on Monday, April 26, at Sustainable West Milford’s monthly meeting. It begins after the Sustainable West Milford regular meeting at 7 p.m. at the Hillcrest Community Center in Room 8. The focus is on children, schools and foods. A discussion will follow. Parents are welcome to bring their school-aged children. Educators and administrators are encouraged to attend. “Most of our food is so processed that we can’t pronounce the long list of ingredients. On average, our food is trucked over 1,500 miles before we bite into it. And seeds are engineered to die out after one season in order to ensure corporate control of the food chain,” according to director Catherine Gund’s statement. “Kids need to know the full benefits of local food: more energy-efficient production, more prosperous farmers, healthier communities, longer lasting and better tasting fruits and veggies. Kids need to know that their food doesn’t only come from the supermarket or the factory, but from nearby farms, trees and the ground. My goal with “What’s On Your Plate?” is to address the shortcomings of our awareness about the relationships between food, its origins and our quality of life.” The New Jersey Farm to School Network made this screening possible.
