Enjoy township's spring programs for kids
West Milford The West Milford Community Services and Recreation Department is sponsoring many programs this spring for kids and families. Come out and do some frog hunting, let the kids get their hands deep in clay, learn to play guitar and take some art lessons. Registrations forms for all activities are available at the Community Services and Recreation Office at Hillcrest Community Center on Macopin Road. Family Frog Night This very popular program is back for a repeat performance. Bring the family for an evening of “frog hunting” with flashlights. You’ll talk about the different frogs in our region and listen to their calls. You’ll also receive a special “frog guide.” This special one-night program will take place at Westbrook Park or the Environmental Boardwalk and is being offered on four different Thursday evenings: April 29, May 6, May 20 at 7:30 p.m., and June 10 and June 17 at 8 p.m. The instructor will notify the participants of the location. The program will last approximately one hour and the cost is $6 per person (age 3 and over), or a maximum of $24 per family per evening. Please wear waders or boots and bring your flashlights. This program is for West Milford residents only. Enrollment is limited so register early. Clay Works for Little Hands This program is for students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade. The class will give the children a fun, hands-on experience designing, creating, decorating and coloring their own handmade pieces. The program will be held in Hillcrest Community Center and will be offered on Monday, April 19. The class will meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and the cost is $10 per class (plus a $7.50 material fee payable to the instructor on the day of class). Non-residents add $10. Pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. Clay Works Enjoy designing your own pieces at “Clay Works.” This program is for students in grades 3 through 8. Clay is a marvelous material to work with and pottery is a craft that involves a total hands-on experience. Participants will have fun designing, decorating and coloring their own handmade pieces. The program will be held in Hillcrest Community Center and will be offered on Tuesday, April 20. The class will meet from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the cost is $10 per class (plus a $10 material fee payable to the instructor on the day of class). Non-residents add $10. Pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. Learn to play guitar This is a new program offered by the township. Beginner guitar class for children is for students in grades 5 through 9. No experience is necessary. This will be a fun, informative, and interactive class. Students will learn all the basics for guitar including note reading, melody, chords, songs and much more. Must have a guitar and music stand. One can be rented or purchased at a discount rate at North Jersey Guitar. Call 973-728-7200. The program will be held at Hillcrest Community Center and will be offered for six weeks on Thursdays, from April 22 through May 27. The class will meet from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and the cost is $100.for the session. Non-residents add $10. Pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. Storybook Creations Art Class This is one of two new art classes for children. This one is for children in grades kindergarten through 2. It will be held on Thursdays from April 22 through May 6 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Hillcrest Community Center. Children will create art projects inspired by popular children’s stories. Make a “Where the Wild Things Are” mask. Take a trip to Whoville and create a village from “Horton Hears a Who.” The class is being taught by Jill Dunlop, a certified New Jersey Pre-K to 8th grade teacher. The cost is $40 per child. Non-residents please add $10 additional. All supplies are included in the cost of the class. Enrollment is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis. Art Through the Ages This new class is for children in grades 3 through 5. It will be offered on Thursdays from April 22 through May 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Hillcrest Community Center. Travel back in time in an art time machine and meet many different artists and their styles. Participants will become cave painters, create a mosaic and make a modern art masterpiece. Each class will have a different focus. The class is being taught by Jill Dunlop, a certified New Jersey Pre-K to 8th grade teacher. The cost is $40 per child. Non-residents please add $10 additional. All supplies are included in the cost of the class. Enrollment is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis.
