Enjoy the fragrant lilacs

Ringwood The New Jersey State Botanical Garden is home to one of the largest and most beautiful collections of lilacs on the East Coast, and they are in full bloom in May. Ranging in color from white to pink to lavender to dark purple, these sweet-scented shrubs offer a spectacular display of spring beauty ready for your enjoyment. The Botanical Garden is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and garden admission is always free. Members of NJBG’s Lilac team will be in the Lilac Garden from 12 noon to 4 p.m. this weekend, May 8 and 9, to introduce visitors to the many different varieties and to answer any questions you may have. As part of its “Garden Saturday” series, NJBG will also host a program on “Lilac Care and Cultivation” on Saturday, May 8, at 10 a.m. in the Carriage House Visitor Center. Lilacs love the local climate and are a fine addition to any garden. NJBG’s Lilac Garden restoration coordinator and Master Gardener Edith Wallace will offer a slide presentation on their care, followed by a walk in the Lilac Garden. A $3 donation is requested. NJBG/Skylands is located on Morris Road in Ringwood. For an event schedule, membership brochure, directions or more information, call 973-962-9534 or visit www.njbg.org.
