Distillery workshop this weekend will include hands-on demo

Warwick, N.Y. Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery will offer a distillation workshop series, beginning on Saturday, Feb. 13. Master Distiller Jason Grizzanti will lead an introductory and intermediate distillation demonstration. The introductory workshops are scheduled for consecutive Saturdays, on Feb. 13, 20 and 27. The intermediate workshops are scheduled for consecutive Saturdays in March 6, 13, 20 and 27. The cost ranges from $30 to $50. Beginners load fermented mash into a copper still during a fruit-brandy series, while more advanced classes focus on whiskey-making and include a technical talk by Grizzanti. Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery, co-owned by Grizzanti, is a leader in fruit distillation and was New York States first fruit micro distillery. The distillery opened its doors in 2001 after receiving a grant from the New York State Department of Agriculture. “We specialize in fruit brandies and liqueurs, but are looking forward to experimenting with other spirits in the future” said Grizzanti. The distillery plans on releasing a whiskey and a gin by the end of the year Grizzanti, a Cornell graduate in fruit science, has studied fermentation and distillation all over the world including the International Centre of Brewing and Distilling at Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University. The demonstration is intended to show participants the science of distillation and allow for an intimate question and answer period. Lunch is provided by Pané, the winery’s bakery and café, and is included in the event cost. Participation is limited and reservations are required. Reservations can be made by calling the winery at 845-258-485. For more information visit www.wvwinery.com.
