Concert to feature music from 'Harry Potter'

SPARTA — The New Sussex Symphony's annual Family Concert, scheduled for Saturday March 16, will offer an intriguing combination of classical tunes, music from the “Harry Potter” movies, an up-and-coming teen soloist and more than 100 student musicians from area music programs.
The event starts at 3 p.m., and takes place at Sparta High School, located at 70 West Mountain Road in Sparta. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place on Sunday, March 17.
More than 100 student musicians from Sparta, Vernon, Faith Center for the Arts, and the Crescendo Suzuki Studio will be joining the orchestra to perform a program titled, “Fair Tales and Fantasies.”
The repertoire includes selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and “Sleeping Beauty,” selections from John William’s “Harry Potter,” Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” and the first movement of Mozart’s “Flute Concerto in D,” featuring soloist Nadira Novruzov. The concert will conclude with Suzuki tunes and Rossini’s “William Tell Overture,” featuring the orchestra and student musicians performing together.
Flutist Nadira Novruzov is in the 11th grade at Bard High School Early College in Manhattan, and has graduated from the Special Music School, a public school for musically gifted children. She has been studying flute since kindergarten and is currently studying with Bart Feller at the Juilliard Pre-College. She is a four-time winner of the New York Flute Club’s annual Young Musician’s Contest. In May of 2012, Nadira was the only flutist selected to participate in the Suzuki Association of Americas' 40th anniversary showcase 'Kaleidoscope' concert at the Minneapolis Orchestra Hall. In the fall of 2012, Nadira played at the winner's recital for the Alexander and Buono Competition at the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall and again, the following year, in a winning duet for the Rondo Young Artist Festival. In January 2014, she was named the Eastern Division winner for the Music Teachers National Association competition; in March she came in second place in the national finals round.
Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Children 5 years old and under are admitted free. Although tickets may be purchased at the door, advance purchase is recommended due to anticipated high turnout. The New Sussex Symphony was founded in 1959. Concert repertoire extends over four centuries, from the early 1700s to contemporary music. In addition to the formal concert series, the symphony acts as a resource to the county's musical community.
