Civil War Orange Blossoms talk slated
Newton “Orange Blossoms,” a presentation about the 124th New York State Volunteer Infantry Regiment, will be the topic of discussion at the gathering of the Civil War Round Table on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Sussex Community College. The talk will be given by Chairman of the Board Joe Biuso. The 124th was a volunteer regiment from Orange County, N.Y. Formed in Goshen during the summer of 1862 by Col. Augustus van Horne Ellis, the regiment was made up of volunteers from the surrounding area, including Port Jervis, Otisville, Wallkill, and Deerpark. This unit fought with the Army of the Potomac in many of its major campaigns. From Fredericksburg through Chancellorsville and Gettysburg (where Ellis was shot through the head), the Orange Blossoms eventually finished the war with Grant in the Overland Campaign, and was present during the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Medals of Honor were awarded to five members of the 124th for both capturing flags and displaying gallantry. For more information, call 845-295-2603 or www.ryersoncwrt.com
