Wantage — History will come alive this summer when the DAR, Chinkchewunsaka Chapter, holds its annual Christmas in July open house at the Rev. Elias VanBunshoten Museum, on July 24, 25, and 26. The event will feature free tours of the museum, reenactors, quilters and food. This year the chapter will host several reenactor groups. Among them are the Robert Erskine Militia, the 27th Regiment and the New Jersey Frontier Guard. These groups will camp on the six acres of the Wantage museum. Also sharing the outside grounds will be local crafters. The Children of the American Revolution group will be demonstrating children’s games from colonial days. The DAR group will also have an attic treasure table. Inside the museum, visitors will find traditional quilters. Members of the Lost Art Lacers will also be on hand to demonstrate their tatting and lace making skills. Some articles will be for sale. The grounds and the rooms of the museum will be decorated for Christmas in a manner similar to the 18th and 19th centuries. Members of the Snufftown Flower Club will decorate the museum’s four fireplace mantles. The tour of the rooms and the grounds will feature decorations of Christmases of the past. Fair Acres Farms will be decorating the wagon house and wood shed. Christmas in July hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Elias Van Bunschooten Museum is located at 1097 Route 23 North in Wantage Township, about 5 miles north of the town of Sussex.
