Brothers Grimm with a not-so-classic twist
POMPTON LAKES The Smiling Rhino Theatre will present “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the original musical version of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale for six performances. Show dates are Jan. 29, 30, and 31; and Feb. 5, 6 and 7. Show times are Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 6 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. While the show is not the Disney version, the performance focuses on a young princess who is ordered killed by her stepmother, the jealous new queen. Abandoned in the forest, Snow White takes up residence with seven little people who are captivated by her and protect her against the queen and her magic mirror. The songs are different, as are some of the character names. The dwarfs, for example, are called Scotty, Blubber, Mosquito, Scrubber, Pepito, Flubber and Fred. Snow White features a cast of 11 and a score written by Broadway composer Michael Valenti and a book written by award-winning children’s playwright Elsa Rael. The play is performed live musical accompaniment. Ticket price is $22 for adults, $20 for seniors and $18 for children 17 and younger. Group rates are available.
