Athletes will swim, ride and run for Pass It Along
First triathlon at Lake Mohawk scheduled for end of July, By Stacy Maldonado SPARTA Three years ago Sparta resident Eleanor Young was training for her first sprint triathlon. The event was taking place in mid-September, “So I was able to swim, bike and run in and around the lake which conveniently is just outside my door.” Young enjoyed training so much she thought Lake Mohawk would be the perfect place for a triathlon. She began creating this race by taking care of the initial preparations herself. This includes devising the route, writing up the course descriptions, drawing detailed plans and figuring out what equipment would be needed. Everything has come together. The 2010 Lake Mohawk triathlon begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, with a 1/2 mile swim, followed by a 10.8 mile bike ride, and then a 3.1 mile run. Young said, “the whole directing experience was completely new, but not difficult.” She said she has participated in well run events. “So I just used my own experience in creating this event.” Young has raced in three sprint triathlons, but not competitively. “I do it purely for fitness and fun.” Her most recent race was the Danskin Triathlon in Sandy Hook in September 2009. “It’s an all-women’s event, proceeds benefit cancer research. I love all kinds of sporting events, but triathlons are becoming very popular these days.” This triathlon will be a first for Sparta and for Sussex County. The Sparta Police department liked the idea, and approved it right away. “Lake Mohawk was actually a little tougher to convince,” said Young. After putting her athletic skills to use by jumping through hoops, Young addressed their questions and concerns in a second meeting, and they also approved the event. Young is thrilled that Lake Mohawk is a partner. “They are not benefiting from any of the proceeds, but are providing the location.” She wanted the proceeds to go to a local charity and chose Pass It Along. She had good things to say about working with the non-profit. “Every person I have worked with at Pass It Along has done a terrific job in supporting all of my efforts.” She also has recruited several folks to help with last details now and on the day of the event. “It has been a challenge getting sponsors but I think this is due to the current state of the economy.” As of now there are 200 athletes registered, along with about a dozen as two- or three-person relay teams. All entrants must pre-register and registration will close at 300 competitors.
