Al Stewart to perform with Empty Pockets

NEWTON — The Newton Theatre presents Al Stewart in a “Year Of The Cat” Classic Album Concert Performance with Special Guests The Empty Pockets on Friday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m.

Al Stewart came to stardom as part of the legendary British folk revival in the 60s and 70s, and developed his own unique style of combining folk-rock music with delicately woven tales of the great characters and events in history. He is best known for his #1 Hit Year Of The Cat from the platinum album of the same name, and follow-up album, Time Passages, which also went platinum. Together with the band The Empty Pockets, Stewart will perform the album Year of the Cat in its entirety.
By the time he was 22 Al Stewart had met the Beatles and played John Lennon's guitar, opened for the Rolling Stones, shared an apartment with Simon & Garfunkel, recorded with Jimmy Page, spent a year playing guitar for Yoko Ono and co-producing her film #Four, and put a young Cat Stevens on stage at Les Cousins where he was master of ceremonies.
Al continues to tour extensively throughout the United States and Europe, providing his fans with the music and personality that they have come to love so well.
The Empty Pockets’ often cerebral and sometimes playful indie rock sound is built upon a strong foundation of the timeless Americana, Blues, and Motown Soul that came before them. An old-school sensibility showcased by multiple lead singers, rich harmonies, and skilled instrumentalists sets “bandmates Josh Solomon, Erika Brett, Nate Bellon and Danny Rosenthal, members of polished yet rootsy Chicago outfit Empty Pockets” (Rolling Stone).
The Empty Pockets have teamed up with a wide range of legendary artists; Kenny Loggins, Simon Kirke (Bad Company/Free), Al Stewart (Year of the Cat), Gary Wright (Dreamweaver), and Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield/Poco), both as direct tour support and backing band. Their sound has evolved, influenced not only by these remarkable musicians, but also through collaboration with independent artists and, most importantly, among themselves. Through The Empty Pockets’ adventures, Solomon and Brett fell deeply in love and united their worlds as husband and wife. Since then, the band built a recording studio and continues to tour incessantly in pursuit of spreading joy through their music.
