Library to host program on George Washington

OAK RIDGE — Will the real George Washington please stand up?
Is he the precocious child who chopped down a cherry tree? Is he the frontiersman who mapped the Ohio territory and fought in the French and Indian War? Is he the general who sailed across the Delaware to surprise the British in Trenton? Is he the “squire” of Mount Vernon?
Find out when art expert and historian Mike Norris presents his Arm Chair Art lecture “Meet George Washington” at the Jefferson Township Public Library on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m.
Through works of art often drawn from area museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Delaware Art Museum, and the New-York Historical Society, Mike Norris will explore how artists of his own time portrayed him for posterity and how that posterity, through its own crop of artists, commemorated his deeds.
Mike got his BA in classics from the University of California at San Diego and his MA in classics and Ph.D. in art history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He spent twenty years at the Cloisters Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
