Linda Carbone and her second grade class from Sussex Christian School were invited to Beemerville Orchard as part of their celebration of Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. At the orchard, the students were given a tour of the sorting room where the apples are sorted and bagged or sorted and made into apple cider.
Following the tour, the children were led into the apple orchard where they had the opportunity to pick their own bag of apples from several different varieties of apple trees. The second grade class ended their birthday celebration with a virtual visit (Skype call) from Johnny Appleseed Festival’s official living historian, playing Johnny, who was making an appearance at the Indiana State Fair.
They also acted out the story of Johnny Appleseed with puppets, performing a Reader’s Theater and making applesauce. Beemerville Orchard, located at 73 Lusscroft Road, Sussex, NJ, is open for farm stand purchases and U-PICK Apples Monday through Saturday 9a-6p. Closed Sunday. Sussex Christian School, located at 51 Unionville Ave, Sussex, NJ, provides a strong, academic program for students in grades pre-K-8 in a Christian environment to families in Northern New Jersey as well as neighboring areas of New York and Pennsylvania.
