Hamburg chiropractor to celebrate 30 years

Dr. Peter Karas will celebrate his 30th anniversary as a chiropractor in March.
As a student, he originally had his sights set on the premed or dental field as he majored in biology at Fairleigh Dickinson University. However, after having an episode with his back after lifting weights at the gym, Karas went to a chiropractor at the suggestion of a friend and the rest is chiropractic history.
“I was amazed that after just one adjustment, my back pain was gone,” Dr. Karas said.
After further investigation, he decided to make it his own career choice. Graduating from Fairleigh, he continued his education at New York Chiropractic College, studying anatomy, biochemistry, human physiology, diagnosis, x-ray and chiropractic techniques on a graduate level. Upon graduation, Dr. Karas began an associateship under the tutelage of Dr. Anthony Amato of Totowa.
“I love the Sussex County area and back in the 1980s it was growing,” Karas pointed out.
The Hamburg, Vernon, Franklin and Sussex town areas proved an excellent location for Karas’ new, budding practice. So, in March of 1987, Karas began his practice of no pain, no drugs and no surgery in the stately house on Vernon Ave. — Route 94 in Hamburg.
“There is no other chiropractor in Sussex County that has more experience treating patients,” Karas said. “I’ve treated roughly 6,000 patients in the last 30 years.”
Karas stresses that new information continues to develop on treatment, exercises, nutrition, supplements and weight management and Karas prides himself in staying on top of these advances. Some of the techniques and treatments available at the Hamburg office are Spinal Decompression Therapy, Cox Flexion Distraction, another form of spinal manipulation, nutritional and weight loss counseling, exercise and rehabilitation, rotator cuff therapy, ultrasound sessions and muscle stimulation. Massage therapy is also available by Dr. Karas’s daughter Ashley, a certified massage therapist.
Anticipating his 30th anniversary, Dr. Karas has no plans for retirement or even semi-retirement. According to him, “health is wealth” and he looks forward to the future and expanding the practice to include an associate, an individual massage area and a possible physical therapy situation where actual movement and exercises will be demonstrated and practiced on site.
A perfect example of an active lifestyle, Karas works out faithfully at the Hardyston YMCA, gardens at the combination residence/office and “attempts to improve playing his saxophone.”
