John Peter “Pete” Vahaly, Jr. 75 years old, died after a short illness at Milford Manor Nursing Home, West Milford, N.J., on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016. Born to John Peter, Sr. and Helen Vahaly in Dover, N.J., he has been a lifelong resident of Franklin, N.J.
Pete was a graduate of Franklin High School and then served with the United States Army during Vietnam. He then worked for the Franklin Police Department for 33 years during which he was appointed as chief of police on April 1, 1993, serving as chief until his retirement in January of 2003. Pete was a member of the New Jersey Police Chiefs Association, active with the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club and an Exempt member of the Franklin Fire Department. Pete enjoyed camping and casino trips and was an avid fan of the New Jersey Devils, the New York Mets and the New York Giants.
Pete is predeceased by his wife, Margot “Meg” Vahaly(2010) and was the devoted father of Heather Cole and her husband, Rob of Wantage Twp., N.J., Dawn Vahaly of Franklin, NJ and J.P. Vahaly and his wife, Casey of Charleston, SC. Loving grandfather of Madison, Skylar and Clayton.
The family will receive their friends at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, 1 Main Street, Franklin, N.J., on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at North Hardyston Cemetery, Hardyston Twp., NJ.
