The Sussex County YMCA is searching for players and teams to participate in its Sixth Annual Community Leaders’ Kickball tournament to be held in conjunction with Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 26.

Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative of the Y, is a free community event that encourages children and families to improve their health through learning and moving. The event will be structured around fun and educational activities that promote exercise and good nutrition. Research shows that without access to activities that stimulate the mind and body, children are more prone to weight gain and academic difficulties.

The annual kickball tournament is a chance for adults to “lead by example” and demonstrate the fact that one is never too old or too young to get active.

“Over the years, the Y’s annual Kickball tournament has grown and the Y is hoping that the trend will continue this year and the years to come, to benefit the physical and community wellness of today and tomorrow,” said Jennifer Gardner, executive director of the Sussex County YMCA.

Area businesses and community groups are invited to form teams of nine to eleven players to participate in the event. Play will be tournament-style, with each team guaranteed a minimum of two games. Nutritious snacks will be provided by Healthy Kids Day event sponsor Eastern Propane. Teams may register for a donation of $300, which is enough to provide a child with a full camp experience this summer. Although many returning teams already have registered, the Y hopes new teams will join the event as well.

“With each registration the Y can send another child to camp, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment where they will stay active and healthy. The local leaders who participate in this event have the chance to make a big impact on the health of a child in your community,” Gardner said.

The Sussex County YMCA’s Health Kids Day and Kickball Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 1-4 p.m.
