Harydston hosts 29th annual county Academic Bowl

HARDYSTON — Glen Meadow Middle School's B team was victorious at the 29th annual Academic Bowl, edging a rival team from Glen Meadow in the championship round at Hardyston Township Middle School on May 16.

Hardyston B finished third after defeating Hardyston B, wich finished in fourth place.

Glen Meadow B took home the perpetual silver bowl trophy, along with both a team trophy and individual trophies, and medals for each team member. The second-place team received a team trophy and boxed medals for the members for their accomplishment. The third- and fourth-place teams each received a team trophy and medals indicating their placements. All students received ribbons and certificates of participation.

Steeped in tradition, the Sussex County Middle School Academic Bowl is an example of the county’s continuing commitment to education. Sussex County had a broad representation of teams who participated in this year’s event: Franklin, Green Township, Hamburg, Hopatcong, Immaculate Conception Regional School, Kittatinny, Newton, Saint Joseph’s School, Sparta, Sussex-Wantage, Vernon Township (Glen Meadow School), and the host school, Hardyston Township. Several districts sent two and three teams to the competition, adding an extra challenge to the day. Eighth grade students made up the majority of the teams, with a few teams composed of both seventh- and eighth-graders, and there were several teams consisting of only seventh graders. Twenty teams participated.

The challenge followed a television game show format, using questions and buzz-in devices. Each round drew from questions on subjects that ranged from general history to mathematics, science, literature and language arts, the performing arts, sports, along with current events.

The top two scores achieved during the day determined the final round, with the third and fourth high scores determining a consolation round. The four teams who had the top scores from the preliminary rounds returned to Hardyston Middle School that evening to determine the final placements.
