LAFAYETTE — The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) has planned its 2010 Spring Schedule of Recycling Events: Boat Shrink Wrap Plus Recycling Program Through June 30 In its third year, this state-wide recycling effort aims to reduce the amount of shrink wrap and other non-biodegradable boating-related waste material in the waste stream. The program includes two drop-off locations in Sussex County: • Danforth’s Inc., located at 60 Main St. (Rt. 517) Ogdensburg, Tuesday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - noon. (973-827-5456) • SCMUA, located at 34 South Route 94, Lafayette, Monday - Saturday, 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. (973-579-6998) For more information about the Shrink Wrap Plus Recycling Program, contact the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority or visit www.scmua.org. Monthly Shredding Services for Sussex County residents and businesses April 16, May 21 and June 18 (third Friday of every month) SK Shred, a Branchville-based mobile document destruction company provides affordable, safe, and secure shredding of sensitive documents on the third Friday of every month, 9 a.m. - noon, at the SCMUA Recycling Center. The cost is $6 per legal/letter sized box, no limit. At the end of each event all residual shredded paper is processed at the SCMUA for recycling. Earth Day Educational Forum Thursday, April 22 The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority and the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group will host their 5th annual Earth Day event on Thursday, April 22, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the SCMUA Solid Waste Facility, located at 34 South Route 94, Lafayette. Other event features include: • Pot a free tree, donated by the New Jersey Forest Service, to take home and plant • Learn about composting with AG Choice, LLC • Learn about hazards to the environment from the Sussex County HAZMAT Team • Tours of the SCMUA Landfill and Recycling Center • Interactive displays by Sussex County Office of GIS and Mosquito Control • Find out alternatives to using plastic bags from Sussex County Clean Communities • Hands on activities by Friends of the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge • Learn about new energy technologies at the Alternative Energy Corner Admission is free to the event, though donations are requested. A food drive is being conducted to collect non-perishable food items for St. James R.C. Church Food Pantry, located in Montague. Food Waste Recycling Forum Friday, April 30 The SCMUA will host a free food waste recycling forum, the 17th in a county-based educational series planned, in conjunction with the Solid Waste Resource Renewal Group (SWRRG) of Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. The forum, the last in the series, will take place at the Sussex County Community College, 1 College Hill Road, Building D, Small Theatre, in Newton, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The forum will include a segment on donation to food banks and all participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the NORWESCAP Food Bank. E-Waste Recycling Event Saturday, May 1 The first of two free collection events of 2010 for local residents and businesses to recycle used computers and other electronic equipment. The SCMUA has partnered with Supreme Asset Management Recovery, Inc. to provide the E-Waste collection and recycling service at the Solid Waste/Recycling Facility from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. Supreme transports the collected items to their Lakewood facility where the materials are demanufactured and recycled for reuse. Household Hazardous Waste Event Saturday, June 5 The first of two free events held annually at the SCMUA Solid Waste/Recycling Facility from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. The SCMUA contracts with a specialized hazardous waste vendor to service the collection event. To discourage residents from disposing of HHW in the garbage or other improper disposal, the SCMUA hosts these free HHW Days in the spring and fall at its Solid Waste/Recycling facility, in Lafayette. Note: Latex paint, motor oil, alkaline or mixed household batteries, asbestos, regulated medical waste and certain other materials are not accepted during the HHW Events, as they can be brought to the SCMUA any day.
