Peer leaders talk to youngsters about bullying
The Hamburg School’s Peer Leaders visited the first- through third-grade classrooms to get the message out that it only takes a second to make a difference. This was the theme of a recent anti-bullying conference, Taking Flight to Change, put on by the Sussex County Coalition for Healthy and Safe Families. During their classroom visit the peer leaders presented a short skit and followed it up with a discussion, giving the younger students a chance to identify the problems they saw portrayed in the skit and then develop solutions. Afterward, the students broke up into small groups to play a board game designed to reinforce social skills and develop social tools to handle and reduce incidences of bullying in the school. Peer leaders guided each group.
