Former Navy Seal to instruct police fitness program in Hamburg

Hamburg — On Jan. 18, the Hamburg Police will host a free training program that, in the words of Police Chief Jan Wright, “will focus on physical fitness, nutrition and police related stress.” The five-hour program will be taught by Stew Smith. Chief Wright has known fitness guru Stew Smith for several years. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and former Navy Seal Lieutenant, Smith is the author of several fitness books and has appeared on television shows such as National Geographic Channel’s “Flight Science.” Smith has worked professionally in the military fitness arena for over 15 years focusing on a specialty of helping people become Navy SEALs or any other member of a unit that requires physical fitness. Other of Smith’s clients just want to lose weight and keep it off. Smith has trained athletes in college, Olympians and professional sports athletes in hockey and baseball. He is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). After almost eight years in the SEAL Teams and an instructor at the Naval Academy Physical Education Department, Smith resigned his commission in 1999 to start his own fitness and freelance writing business. He is based in Maryland. He currently trains young men and women for any profession that requires a physical fitness test, from law enforcement to military special-forces. Smith has been labeled the Personal Trainer to the Heroes of Tomorrow and recently launched a Web site: www.heroesoftomorrow.org. This site is a tribute to fallen heroes and assists others to train for any physical fitness test in the military and law enforcement agencies. “I think that today’s police officers face so many different type of situations that often physical fitness—sometimes it gets forgotten,” said Hamburg’s Chief Wright.
