Civil War round table
Newton John Punola will be the guest speaker at the Colonel Henry Ryerson Civil War Round Table at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, at Sussex County Community College theater (D-building). Punola will speak about the 1864 Shohola POW train wreck, when an Erie railroad locomotive pulling 17 cars and carrying over 800 Confederate prisoners to Elmira Prison, collided with a coal train heading south on the same tracks. The train wreck site and casualty burial locations are located only about 40 miles north of Newton. A nationally known outdoor writer, book author, public speaker and fisherman, Punola has made many appearances on national television. Meetings are free and open to the public.
