Thomas C. Pyle of Sparta has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester of 2008 at Geneva College. Sparta residents Simon K. Foster and Kaila E. Hawriluk have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at Albright College in Reading, Pa. Sparta native Gregory Paul Slota was recently awarded a doctorate degree in biomedical engineering from Virginia Tech/Wake Forest’s School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Tech in 1999 and his master’s degree in 2002 from the University of Virginia, both in biomedical engineering. Slota is the son of Marguerite Lynn and Stanley Slota of Sparta. He was active in wrestling, Boy Scouts, including becoming an Eagle Scout, the marching band as well as several county orchestras and church ministries when he was a Sparta student. He is now employed by Perm State where he does his post-doctoral work. A group of area students were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at Felician College, with campuses in Rutherford and Lodi. The are: Lee Ann McCarth and Stephen Murrell of Newton; Sparta residents Arlene Kiste and Izehiese Obanor; Stanhope residents Margaret Madden and Maria Tsilios; and Glenwood residents Camille Limongelli and Sylmon Padmore. A group of area students were recently named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. They are Sparta residents Taylor Koriakin and Jamie Tuttrup. Sparta resident Bethany Irven recently received an academic award from the College of Saint Elizabeth at its 20th annual Student Academic Leadership Awards Dinner and Ceremony, sponsored by the Morristown college’s alumni association. Awards are given to the students for academic excellence, leadership and service to the community. Irven wil graduate this May and plans to become a pediatric nutrition specialist. Torre Johnson of Sparta was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at Mt. Ida College in Newton, Mass., where she is a design major. Sparta resident Marcella Lusardi was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at the Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science in New York Vincent Fiorentino of Sparta was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at the College of New Jersey in Ewing. He has also achieved membership in The College of New Jersey’s Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in an undergraduate, master’s or doctoral program at a school accredited by AACSB International. Sparta resident Kyle W. Hampson has been accepted into The National Scholars Honor Society, an organization which recognizes top academic scholars. He is also a member of the A.I.A.A., the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which is a world forum for aerospace leadership. He is currently studying aerospace and mechanical engineering at Syracuse University and is a 2007 graduate of Sparta High School.
