Genesis Farm open house is May 1
Frelinghuysen The Genesis Farm in Frelinghuysen will hold an open house on Saturday, May 1. The event, to be held from 10:30 to 1:30 p.m. welcomes members of the public as well as any new and potential members for the upcoming year. Free tours of the farm and a sampling of dishes made using its produce will be available. The community supported garden at Genesis Farm was one of the first farms in the country to practice “community supported agriculture,” where members pay in advance for a share in the upcoming harvest. This practice frees farms from profit-driven market pressures and allows farmers to grow a variety of foods while maximizing the long term health of the land. Members benefit from having a direct connection to the land, from knowing how their food is grown, and from enjoying local and fresh food. The garden at Genesis Farm currently grows over a 100 different vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs and flowers. It also has fields devoted to growing grain and oats and multiple greenhouses. There are some pick-your-own crops such as strawberries, hardy kiwis, and flowers, but most produce is harvested by the CSG’s three full-time farmers and their farming apprentices.
