Time for us to return the favor to vets

It’s not surprising a person would park in your driveway taking stuff marked for the vets.

On a brighter side, my husband and I were shopping at Job Lot in Sparta on Veterans Day. A lady approached him, thanking him for his service. Later she returned with a $50 gift card for him.

My husband stood there speechless with tears in his eyes. That gesture of kindness made all the difference to him.

He had quit school to join the Navy and to help support his mother, who was on welfare with three other siblings.

The draft was in effect. He chose to enlist. Many were drafted into that war and many fled to Canada. I praise the ones who chose to fight for our country and freedom. I have no good words to express how I feel about the ones who fled to Canada.

Coming home off the plane from Vietnam, he thought it was raining only to find out he had been spit on. As he looked up, a man held up his middle finger at him. So that wasn’t a myth.

No wonder these vets didn’t want to talk about their experience when returned home.

My husband suffers from PTSD and has received help through support groups.

We should thank all the vets who served in the wars fighting for our country and freedom not only on Veterans Day. Those few words make all the difference.

They sacrificed a lot and it is time for us to return the favor by supporting them and helping them.
