Center accepting applications for coaches, volunteers

NEWTON — The Center for Prevention and Counseling is accepting applications for people who want to become trained volunteers and recovery coaches, sharing hope and offering help to people struggling with addiction.
Hope is the belief that challenges certain conditions can be overcome and is the foundation of recovery. Who better to carry that message of hope than people with lived experience? Being trained as a volunteer at The Center or becoming a Recovery Coach can be a rewarding experience that includes the understanding of recovery as being highly personal and occurring via many pathways. Coaches and volunteers may be utilized within the successful CLEAR program, Sussex County’s police assisted addiction recovery program. CLEAR enables residents to enter local police departments between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m, without an appointment, to ask for help, whereby trained peer recovery coaches meet with them and help them navigate services.
The different options for recovery include many supportive avenues to increase the opportunity that a person or family finds recovery. Many times, it is often family members who come in through the CLEAR program, asking to talk to a recovery coach with questions about helping loved ones seek assistance. Whether you, yourself, have experienced addiction and recovery first-hand or, you’re a friend or family member that has learned how to best support a loved one through your own recovery experience,
The Center encourages people to learn more about these unique and different opportunities to be part of our county solution to substance use. This is a volunteer opportunity that has the potential to become a paid position which connects people to recovery supports. The ideal persons will be enthusiastic and passionate about working closely with people in recovery from alcohol and other addictions, family members, friends and allies.
The Center will be providing a 30-hour Recovery Coach training in late March 2019, to those interested, utilizing The Recovery Coach Academy, developed by CCAR (Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery), focusing on providing individuals with the skills needed to guide, mentor and support anyone who would like to enter into or sustain long-term recovery from an addiction to alcohol or other drugs.
A $50 fee for educational materials is being requested with an option of submitting an essay to receive a scholarship to be eligible for the training is available.
