Roger T. O’Brien of Hamburg, N.J., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was 97.

Roger was born in Newton, N.J., to the late Clarence and Sadie (McMickle) O’Brien. He grew up in Newton, later on moved to Lafayette, N.J.,m and has resided in Hamburg over the past 63 years. Roger was a proud Navy veteran that served during World War II. He was a lifelong member at the Newton VFW Post 5360. He was an avid bowler and past-president of his bowling league. He coached Hamburg Baseball for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and doing crossword puzzles. He liked going into the casinos and watching the Mets on TV. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Prior to his retirement, he worked as an assemblyman for Ford Motor Company.

The beloved husband of Margaret O’Brien, Roger is survived by his loving children, Roger O’Brien (Toni), Steven O’Brien, Robert O’Brien, Dennis O’Brien (Maria), Jo-Ann Robbins (Ronnie), Denise Hanna, George O’Brien and Terry O’Brien (Karen); grandchildren, Christopher, Anthony, Marc, Kevin, Steven, Colleen, Gail, Todd, Charles, John, Daniel, Elizabeth, Thomas, Philip, Sean, Aaron, Delaney, Noah, Cameryn, Patrick, Brandon, Carissa, Edward, and Megan; and 30 beloved great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Eston, Milton, Gerald, Lee, Reba, Virgina and Patti; and two daughters, Beverly Hewitt and Kimberly Baumann.

Visitation was held Feb. 8 at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home in Newton, followed by a funeral service. Interment was in Newton Mausoleum in Newton.
