Rowan has strong pitching season at Kean

Several local student athletes left their mark in collegiate sports during the spring.

• Nolan Rowan, a graduate of High Point Regional High School, was a junior pitcher for the baseball team at Kean University in Union. He appeared in 10 games and started in nine of them, with a 6-3 record on the mound.

He had a 2.83 earned run average and struck out 52 batters.

Rowan earned First Team American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All Region honors.

The Cougars posted an overall record of 27-17-1 with a mark of 19-10 on their home field. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), they went 12-5-1.

They advanced to the NJAC Tournament, where they went 4-2 with victories over Stockton University, Montclair State University, Rowan University and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and losses to TCNJ (twice).

• Meredith Yaskovic (High Point) was a sophomore competitor in sprints for Ramapo College in Mahwah.

She was part of the 4 by 100 relay team that earned Honorable Mention All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The relay team placed third at the NJAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Ramapo.

The Roadrunners placed fourth in the team scoring at the NJAC Outdoor Championships.

Yaskovic is listed as a business management major.

• Jacob Buurman, a graduate of Vernon Township High School, was a junior pitcher for the baseball team at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.

He appeared in 14 games and had a 2-1 record with a 3.32 earned run average. He also had one save and struck out 19 batters.

Buurman earned Second Team All Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Division honors.

The Ducks had an overall record of 27-16, with a mark of 16-6 at home and a 14-10 record in the conference. The team went 1-2 in the MAC Freedom Championship tournament with a triumph over Wilkes University and defeats to Arcadia University (twice).

Buurman is listed as quantitative finance major.

• Ella Shade (Vernon) was a sophomore midfielder for the Ramapo College women’s lacrosse team. She played in all 15 games and started in two of them, earning two goals.

The Roadrunners posted four overall wins, with three earned on their home field.

Shade is listed as an elementary education major.

• Taylor Shawgo (Vernon) was a sophomore who played attack for the Montclair State University women’s lacrosse squad. She played in five games, starting in one, and scored a goal.

The Red Hawks tallied four overall victories, with one win at home and one victory in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Shawgo is listed as a business administration major.
