Tenth annual butterfly release commemorates lost loved ones NEWTON — The grasses and skies surrounding Sussex County Community College were dotted with orange on Sunday, June 27, with the release of flocks of Monarch butterflies at the 10th Annual Butterfly Release Celebration. Hundreds of spectators overflowed the campus’ pavilion for the event, which was coordinated by the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. Close to 1,000 names were read, submitted to the hospice in honor of loved ones. There were musical selections by the McDonald Family Singers and Mario M. Inglima, who performed his original song, “Butterfly.” At the conclusion of the program, the butterflies were escorted out in their tulle-netted cages by hospice volunteers, and released into the air. They landed on the grass as well as the spectators themselves. “It’s a powerful experience to join with others to take a moment out of our busy schedules to commemorate those we love.” said Bob McCracken, of Smith-McCracken & Wood Funeral Homes, the event’s sponsor. The Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice is part of the Karen Ann Quinlan Memorial Foundation. The group has celebrated their 30th anniversary this year. It was founded by Julia and Joseph Quinlan in honor of their daughter, Karen Ann. The non-profit organization helps to provide hospice care, and support for the families of those undergoing the care.
