Cub Scout Pack 150 of Sparta marked Disability Awareness Month with a special meeting and the introduction of a tranquility base.

Deb Reidmiller, vice chairwoman of education and training of the Boy Scouts National Special Needs and Disabilities Committee, was the guest speaker at the pack’s March meeting.

She discussed visible and invisible disabilities, then the Scouts had the opportunity to experience simulations of various disabilities, such as mobility, vision, hearing, dexterity, ADHD and dyslexia. They also learned some sign language.

Cubmaster Diane Bose presented the pack with a tranquility base, which can be used by Scouts when they feel overstimulated and need a safe, tranquil space.

The tranquility base includes items that are sensory-friendly, such as noise-canceling headphones, Play Doh, fidget toys and drawing supplies.

Disability awareness and a tranquility base are just two ways that Pack 150 welcomes and supports Scouts of all abilities.
