SCCC's McGuire Center offers free automotive workshops all summer

Sussex County Community College’s new McGuire Technical Education Center (MTEC), opened in Fall 2018, is ready to show the community what its students already know: this is a great space to learn about cars, car repair, and so much more. Join Sussex students and staff for a series of free community automotive & tech workshops this summer at the MTEC location.
The Summer Technical Workshop Series includes a Pallet Furniture Workshop, two automotive tech workshops, and “Tire Tuesdays.” A Car & Bike Show series will also take place monthly at the Education Center.
First in the Summer Technical Workshop Series is the Pallet Furniture Workshop, which will be held Thursday, June 13. Two sessions are being offered, running 2-4 p.m. or 5-7 p.m. In this hands-on workshop, explore your creative side and build something beautiful from reclaimed wood.
“Tire Tuesdays” will be held every Tuesday from June 18-Aug. 6 (except July 2) from 9-11 a.m. These useful classes are great for casual learners who want to make sure they know when their tires are at their best. The Rubber Manufacturers Association reports that approximately 70% of vehicles have at least one underinflated tire, which can lead to blowouts, fires, difficulty stopping, and more. Learn about tire inspection, tire inflation, and a brief safety check of your vehicle as a whole as we prepare for the season of weekend beach trips.
For those who cannot make the morning time, two afternoon sessions will be offered on Thursday, June 27, from 2-4 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.
An Automotive Oil Change Workshop on Thursday, July 18, discusses this simple but often overlooked key maintenance item. Basic procedures for a properly executed oil change will be discussed. The workshop has two sessions, 2-4 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.
All workshops are free of charge, but space is limited per workshop, so registration is required. Please contact Jason Fruge at jfruge@sussex.edu if you have questions or to register.
In addition to the workshops, the First Annual SCCC McGuire Technical Education Center Car & Bike Show Series invites the public to meet MTEC staff, take a look at students’ rides, and show off your own in a fun, casual setting.
Dates for the Car & Bike Show Series are June 6, July 11, and August 8. The shows run 6-8 p.m. Free to attend, Dirty Water Dogs will be available for purchase, all proceeds benefitting the MTEC scholarship fund.
All of these special summer events will be held at the SCCC McGuire Technical Education Center at 47 Main St. in Newton. For more information, please contact Jason Fruge at jfruge@sussex.edu.
