Council tells JCP&L to put in led street lights

Mayor Nicholas Giordano and the Franklin Borough Council told Jackie Espinoza, area manager, of Jersey Central Power & Light, to put in 50 Watt LED lights on Main Street.
The addition of street lights has been an ongoing discussion at council meetings. Council member Joseph Limon said, “Please make sure 6769 Cork Hill Road also gets a light. I’ve been asking for 5 years!”
Giordano asked Administrator Alison Littell McHose to make sure that location gets added to the list. Espinoza was also there to share approved modifications to the Reliability Program. She spoke of more tree trimming and adding what is called TripSavers so entire circuits will not go down.
Giordano also asked Espinoza to look at the needs for Susquehanna Street as it one of the locations in the borough that is notorious for losing power.
Borough council members also took a definitive stand against Rain Tax. The resolution proclaims to local residents and businesses, “that the municipality will not collect new storm water management or rain taxes.”
Giordano explained there was a need to introduce this resolution because the state passed a law allowing municipalities to create another utility authority and collect a rain tax by square footage and he and council members were not in support of that law.
Freeholder Dawn Fantasia informed council members that she will be the liaison with Franklin, Hardyston, Ogdensburg and Vernon. She asked council members to let her know about events so she can attend. Particularly interesting to Giordano was news from Fantasia that Bob Dabinet from Franklin may become a representative to Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority.
The mayor and others from council have wanted a representative from Franklin.
Borough Police asked council members about exploring the option to obtain a cargo truck or Humvee type vehicle to support the Borough during emergencies, weather related or other. This inquiry would be through Federal LESO grant Program and although the Borough would probably have to pay insurances, they would not have to pay for cost of the vehicle(s).
Littell McHose reminded residents of the Memorial Day Parade being held on Monday May 27th, starting at 10:45 a.m. at the American Legion. Littell McHose let residents know she has been busy with many permit requests for fences and decks in anticipation of warmer weather. She also reached out to the landlord of the building that formerly housed Roy Rogers and said they were very responsive to her request to make the building look better and to do something about the signs. Many residents were upset with the building being such an eyesore. She also explained the landlord, too, did not realize they were going to leave so abruptly.
Franklin Pond will not open on May 25th but lifeguards are being hired. Littell McHose said she is “hopeful it will open by end of June.”
