Crystal Cup competition is under way

Chilly weather did not prevent Crystal Springs Golf Resort Members and Guests from gathering at the Black Bear Golf Course on Wednesday, May 1, for the first in a monthly series of qualifiers to identify the competitors in the end of season Crystal Cup Championship hosted by the Crystal Springs Resort.
Each month during the golf season one of the Resort’s golf courses sponsors a qualifying event following a variety of golf competition formats. May was Black Bear Golf Club’s turn. The event under the leadership of General Manager Ryan Delaney the format chosen was a four golfer team scramble in which each player hits his or her shot and the team selects the best of the four to play the next shot continuing through the completion of the hole and the 18-hole competition. The scores are adjusted based on the team handicaps and the team with the lowest net golf score is the winner.
In Wednesday’s competition the team of Dona Wallerius, Mary Lou Nicoletti, Robert “Burner Bob” Wallerius and Tony Alfano carded a net score of -19 under par 15, with the team of Zach Albe, Daniel Dessart, Thomas Rande and David Bruindage scoring a -16 under par 56 to take second place. Both teams qualified for the end of the season Crystal Cup Shootout Championship.
Prizes were also awarded to the best performers in the longest drive and closest to the pin competitions. John Schneider’s shot which landed 4’7” from the pin was good enough to win closest to the pin on Hole #11 while closest to the pin honors on hole #14 went to Tony Alfano with a measurement of 6’9”. Men’s longest drive went to Gene Komorowski. Dona Wallerius was the women’s long drive winner and Steve Van Dyke took the prize for senior’s longest drive.
